TOPOGRAPHY |
About one third of the Prince George area,
mainly in the southeast, is occupied by part of the steeply-sloping Fraser Plateau,
approximately 3,000 feet above sea level. The remaining area is occupied by the rolling
Fraser Basin, which includes part of the Prince George glacial lake basin, below
approximately 2,500 feet, and the entrenched valleys of the Fraser River and four of its
tributaries. Vegetation in the area is within the Montane and Sub-alpine forest regions
with the latter occurring mainly on the Fraser Plateau. White Spruce and Lodgepole Pine
are the main tree species, and Alpine Fir occurs at the higher elevations. Black Spruce,
Douglas Fir, Trembling Aspen, Western White Birch, and Willows also occur.
A mixture of fine textured clay deposits and medium textured soils are found in Prince
George and surrounding areas. The fine textured clay deposit soils are cold (they have
high moisture retention) and have fair to good nutrient levels. Medium textured soils have
sandy loam to silty and clay loam textures (with some areas having a clay layer at 15 - 20
cm). |
